Emphasizes duration of an ongoing past action up until another past event. Shows cause and effect, and how long something had been happening.

Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing with past continuous. WRONG: I had been watching when he came (single). CORRECT: I was watching when he came.
Mistake 2: No duration context. WRONG: I had been arrived. CORRECT: I had arrived.
Mistake 3: Stative verbs. WRONG: I had been knowing. CORRECT: I had known.
