Gerunds and Infinitives
📖
Explanation
A gerund is a verb form ending in '-ing' used as a noun. An infinitive is 'to' + base verb, also used as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Verbs followed by gerund: enjoy, avoid, finish, mind, suggest, practice, keep, consider. 'I enjoy swimming.' 'She avoids eating junk food.'
Verbs followed by infinitive: want, decide, hope, plan, agree, refuse, promise, learn. 'I want to swim.' 'She decided to leave.'
Verbs that take both with meaning change: stop + gerund (quit): 'He stopped smoking.' stop + infinitive (pause to do something): 'He stopped to smoke.' remember/forget + gerund (past memory): 'I remember locking the door.' + infinitive (future task): 'Remember to lock the door.'
Gerund as subject: 'Swimming is good exercise.' Infinitive as purpose: 'I went to the store to buy food.'
